Confused by all of the conflicting information about Caesarean sections?
No matter how you feel about them, it’s a fact that at least 25 percent of all deliveries are by Caesarean section.
Birmingham-based gynaecologist Gabrielle Downey busts the most common myths even the most experienced mothers believe.
Here, in a piece for Healthista, she explains the truth behind most of the myths – and which ones are false.
1. ‘ONCE A CAESAREAN ALWAYS A CAESAREAN’
No. You can have a vaginal delivery if you wish—70 per cent of women are successful the second time around.
The main risk is scar rupture, but it only happens to one in 200 women with a previous Caesarean section.
The risk of scar rupture increases with the number of previous Caesareans you have had, however, you may be advised to have a planned Caesarean.
2. ‘YOU DON’T BOND WITH YOUR BABY AS WELL’
I think the only time this may be true is a general anaesthetic Caesarean as you do not get to see the baby being born and you are much more ‘out of it’ from the drugs for a number of hours.
In reality, I don’t think that the bond of mother and child is solely dependent on which body part the baby exited from.
Most maternity units practice ‘skin-to-skin’ as soon as possible with mum and baby even if the birth was by Caesarean. Nature does what it needs to do.
THE BENEFITS OF A C-SECTIONIn a planned (elective) situation, you have more control over events.
You know the date in advance and can plan.
They are quick (usually less than 45 minutes in total) and most doctors let you see the baby being delivered and take pictures.
Your scar is neat and in a part of your body that you don’t use much.
You have pain relief for the delivery and afterwards.
You don’t have trauma to your vagina (birth canal) and thus sex will feel the same afterwards.
At least 10 per cent of women who have a vaginal delivery will have some form of damage to bowel and bladder function, which may take many years to become evident.
THE COSTS OF A C-SECTIONThere will be a lot of people in the operating room.
The anaesthetic (usually a single needle in the back that works within 5 to 10 minutes) can drop your blood pressure, give you “the shakes” and you can feel sick – not good when you are lying flat on your back.
You feel movement, and in a small number of women the block is incomplete, that is, uyou feel pain or sharp tugging and have to be put to sleep.
The recovery time is longer than a vaginal birth (a few more days,) and you have to stay in the hospital for at least 24 hours afterwards compared to six hours after a vaginal delivery.
The scar is numb for many months but does eventually heal completely so you are unaware of it.

As she grabbed a fistful of the red upcountry loam soil and dropped it in the grave with resigned acceptance, I looked right inside her eyes and reacted with horror at the overt capillaries, splashed all over her eyes like weeds on a neglected garden.
I was young when my father died. And naïve. It was back in the days when I was certain that crying was for children. Not grownups.
So when my mother turned up at the funeral with red swollen eyes, I tugged at Ezra's arm and asked him, "Ezra, who beat mother?"
"What do you mean?" Ezra, my elder brother, asked, his eyes focused more on the hole our father was disappearing into, than on this curious little boy, whose appreciation of death was as non-existent as his appreciation of life.
"Her eyes." I commented. "They look horrifying."
"It's what happens when people lose people they care about."
a) She partied hard last night and something went wrong; or
b) This is a walk (or drive) of shame from a house that used to be of pleasure but suddenly turned into a house of pain.
The silence in the car bites. My radio is broken again, it is a little misty outside with a light drizzle going and the stranger in the car looks like a magnet to the question, "Are you OK?"
So I ask.
She hits me with a sledge hammer of silence and stares hard out the window. I ask if I should drive her to a police station and she quips, "No. Just drive me home, OK?"
"I'm sorry madam for dipping my nose into your business, but allow me to be honest and say that whatever it is that has you crying this early in the morning..."
"My boyfriend dumped me because I had my period and the blood got on his sheets, OK?" She spits. "Can we go home now?"
"People do that?" I ask conspiratorially and she takes the bait.
"Weird, right? It's a period. Women get them all the time. He shook me up violently at five in the morning and went on about how I was disgusting."
I drive in silence for a bit. Considering the grey weather, it is still a little dark so I'm driving with the headlights on. "Look outside." I tell her and she looks. "What do you see?"
"Kids running to school. People hurrying to work. A carpenter carrying couches from his showroom to the roadside for display." She faces me. "Why?"
"Just as what you see outside is normal, so is a woman's period. The problem here is that periods have been treated as this mysterious and disgusting freak of nature that should be kept away from men at all costs.
I wouldn't be surprised hence that a man would kick his woman out in the morning for 'exposing him' to the 'disgust'".
With her eyes puffy and her shoulders slumped, she alights at Kiambu town and I travel back to the day my mother buried my father.
I shudder at the thought of having to remember that day from the look in the eyes of a woman whose man couldn't stomach the idea of menstrual blood on his sheets.
Later when I asked my mother about her eyes, she said, "Son, when a woman cries, someone listens. If it's not you, then it's the universe. Whoever listens, acts. Don't let the universe act. For it'll be against you."

The Christian community in the United States of America has been thrown into shock as two female Pastors who are pastors wedded at a church in East Orange, New Jersey.
The New York Times reports that the newlywed couple, Pastors Twanna Gause and Vanessa Brown, tied the knot at the New Vision Full Gospel Baptist Church, with their action causing a lot of discomfort among their congregations and other Christians in their community.
Most pained about the decision of the women of God was Gause's father, The Rev. Sam Gause Sr., who is affiliated with the Center of Hope Church of God in Christ in Riverdale, Georgia, declaring firmly that his daughter was tricked by the devil.
Rev. Gause Snr. told the New York Times that he was invited to his daughter's wedding to Brown but declined the invitation due to differences in theological beliefs.
"Twanna very well knows I'm not for that kind of lifestyle. I believe that God wanted us to procreate through a natural process, and by no means am I happy about this because it is unnatural. We all have a conscience.
It is through that conscience that we hear from our Creator as to what is right and what is wrong, and if God did not want us to procreate, then why didn't He just create billions of people with no gender at all? He must have had a reason for doing what He did," Rev. Gouse Snr. said.
The couple met as choir girls some 30 years ago and have been dating secretly without letting out their true sexual orientations.
At the wedding, 45-year-old Twanna, who is listed as the Pastor of Worship and Liturgy at Rivers of Living Water Ministries located on Manhattan's Upper West Side neighbourhood, played the role of the husband while her 46-year-old wife, Vanessa, is listed as the church's senior pastor.
Speaking on why her father would not go to the wedding, Twanna said: "My father would not come here because he does not believe in same-sex marriage.
He told me the devil tricked me into this, and that if we had been married in biblical times, we would have been stoned to death."
Both Twanna and her wife grew up in Christian homes and were both briefly involved in relationships with men before embarking on their relationship.
In 2008, however, years after they started seeing each other romantically, Twanna and Vanessa revealed the news to her father while at a religious conference in Atlanta.
"My father didn't take it too well," Twanna began. "He slammed the Bible down on a table and said to us, 'Did you all read this book?' He was furious.
The couple was joined in matrimony by Rev. [Dr.] Yvette Flunder, the Presiding Bishop of the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries.
Diamond Platnumz has wished his ex-girlfriend Wema Sepetu a happy birthday. The two dated for years and he even put a ring on it to mark his territory.
But the wedding never was. They broke up over irreconcilable differences and in few weeks, the Salome singer was spotted with Zari.
Diamond recently admitted that it was hard for him to get over Wema but Zari did a good job to make him get over the former Miss Tanzania.
The Bongo Flava singer was very careful not to attract insults from fans as he posted a photo of Wema and Idris Sultan who is Wema’s immediate ex-boyfriend.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADAM….”
Idris, a former Big Brother winner, and comedian also wished her an indirect birthday message but the two have been rumoured not to be in good terms. In the past they had been throwing blows at each other on social media.
Wema is among the few celebrities who has had a long chain of boyfriends among them the Late Steven Kanumba, TID,Ommy Dimpoz, Diamond, Idris and a little-known Tanzanian model.
Here are photos of Wema as she celebrated her 29th Birthday:
Namibian star and 2013 Big Brother winner Dilish Mathew is pregnant. This will be another celebrity kid as many have speculated that Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz is responsible.
Before Diamond was on the radio admitting that he impregnated a video vixen, he and Dilish were spotted having fun together in Zanzibar.
And yes, she is the woman rumoured to have broken Avril’s relationship with South African boyfriend.
News came in after paparazzi caught the two at the same luxury hotel but they were keen not to share photos of themselves together. The two however posted a similar photo that fueled the rumours.
When Diamond’s photographer shared a photo of his boss swimming at the beach, Zari responded with a middle finger…Is this prove that she might have known that her hubby was with someone else?
Hours later, the Namibian socialite wannabe was seen singing to Diamond’s love song titled Love You Die.
Now, she just posted a photo of her baby bump and captioned:
“A BABY OR A BURGER?”
However when asked about this Namibian girl, Diamond denied even meeting up with her:
“HABARI ZA KUKUTANA NA DILLISH ZANZIBAR SIO ZA KWELI, MIMI NILIKUWA ZANZIBAR KWA KAZI ZANGU BINAFSI NA NILIKAA SIKU MBILI NIKARUDI DAR PEKEE YANGU. SIJAONANA NA HUYU DADA NA WALA SIKUWA NAE. HUO NI UZUSHI NA NDIO MAANA NILIKUWA KIMYA KWENYE HILI.”
It will be remembered that he had denied that Hamisa’s pregnancy was his and told her to tell people who the father was…On live radio!
But later admitted that aliwanga ndaaaani, ndaaani kapsaa. Ama namna gani.
