‘I Contemplated Killing Two Of The Children Because Of Poverty,’ Confesses Mother Of 9 Who Has Just Given Birth To Triplets
A woman who could not vote on August 8th has she delivered triplets; two girls and a boy in Eldoret, and named them after Uasin Gishu’s Governor Jackson Mandago, Women Rep Gladys Shollei and area MP Janet Rotich.
The woman said the reason for the naming stems from the fact that on August 8th she was in hospital where she delivered triplets has named the children after the above three leaders she would have voted for in Uasin Gishu.
The 36-year-old Winnie Ngetich Chebet who is a squatter living on land belonging to the Moi Barracks Recruits Training School in Eldoret has amazed her relatives and villagers with the move which she says was to make her feel she had fulfilled her desire even though she could not cast her vote.
“I WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR THE THREE LEADERS HAD I GONE TO THE BALLOT BUT AFTER I DELIVERED THE CHILDREN I THOUGHT IT WAS WISE TO NAME THEM AFTER THOSE MY HEART WANTED TO SUPPORT,” SHE SAYS.
She had delivered twins in the past and has nine children. They live in a grass thatched house at Kamagut village.
“My twins are aged five years and God has also blessed me with triplets to add to my other children,” said the woman who is full of smiles despite the poverty she lives in as a squatter.
Chebet says she at one time contemplated killing two of the children because of poverty but she thought of people who are childless.
“I TOLD MYSELF THAT GOD KNOWS WHY HE HAS BLESSED ME WITH SUCH A FAMILY AND THAT HE WILL PROVIDE FOR THEM,” SHE SAYS.
Since they were born, neighbors and friends having been visiting the home to rejoice with the family and Chebet says the children are now a blessing to her.
She said though she wanted to kill two of them due to poverty, she had to change her mind after thinking of people who visit hospitals in search of children
Chebet says she will now use family planning methods to avoid conceiving again and so that she can take care of the children.
“I feel strong and doctors said I can give birth as many times as I want but I am now contended with the bundles of joy I have and my family is big enough”, she said.
Father of the children Samson Ngetich who is a farm labourer in the area said he was excited with the birth of the triplets and will work hard to take care of the family.
“THIS ARE BLESSINGS FROM GOD AND I WILL WORK LIKE A MAN TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY,” SAID NGETICH.
He said he voted for the same leaders and allowed his wife to name the children after the three leaders.
Ngetich said the three had promised to deal with problems facing the squatters in the area.
