A 32-year-old woman who has never had sex or even been kissed says she's not ashamed - because there's nothing "wrong" with being a virgin.
The woman has not yet had a relationship, but doesn't worry that she's "not worth liking" and doesn't pity herself - despite the reactions of others.
In an article for an Australian website, she describes how someone once greeted her at a social event with the words: "Oh, it's The Virgin!”
On other occasions, she says she has been told she must be "too picky" - an infuriating comment typically made by people who don't know her.
The woman, who has remained anonymous, shared how it feels to have no sexual experience "at an age when most people do" on MamaMia. "I don’t feel shame because I don’t think there is something inherently ‘wrong’ with being a virgin or with me," she writes in the article.
"I don’t worry that I’m not worth liking," she adds.
In contrast, she says there are many people with sexual experience who should feel shame - such as those who have cheated on or lied to a partner.
The woman goes on to question how she came to be in such a situation.
"It wasn’t a conscious decision. I, like many people, definitely want to find a person to love and respect who will reciprocate that," she says.
She describes how although she has been attracted to others on "many occasions", she has found some of them to be already in relationships.
In the cases of the single ones, she says the encounters never led to anything - there was either no spark for her or "not enough spark" for them.
As for one-night stands, she writes that the idea is unappealing to her.
The woman, from Australia, has been most strongly attracted to people she sees regularly, such as those in her social circle and colleagues.
But she says she fears they would feel uncomfortable if she told them.
She adds that she has previously been rejected twice after sharing her feelings.
The woman concludes that she, and others in a similar situation, face some barriers to starting a relationship - but these are "not insurmountable".
